New Update to the 9000 Locomotives
Interactive Steam Locomotive Servicing Facilities
Part of the update for the 9000 Series Locomotives is the new interactive locomotive servicing facilities. This includes an interactive Coal Tower, an interactive Water Column and a stationary Water Tank. The Coal Tower has animated coal chutes that drop down and animated coal effects that fill the locomotive tender.
The Water Column is also animated and once the locomotive stops at the Water Column, the water hatch on the tender opens and the water column swings around, drops down, and fills the tender with water.
Also included is a 200,000 gallon Water Tank modeled after the water tank in the Laramie, Wyoming engine terminal. Water plugs were usually placed on tracks near the coal tower and the tenders would be filled with water before loading coal or after the coal is loaded and the locomotive is leaving the coal tower. Then the loco would continue on for servicing at the round house or be called up to its next assignment. The Water Tank is non functional and is designed to be placed near the water columns for aesthetics only.
These items can be downloaded below and once installed are listed in the Trainz Surveyor as:
|
Steam Locomotive Coal Tower
|
Steam Locomotive Water Column
|
Steam Locomotive Water Tank |
Note: The Water Column will only interact with the UP 9000 Locomotive Tenders. The Coal Tower will interact with all steam locomotive tenders. The coal tower is designed to be used in a prototypical manner like it was in real life. When refueling a locomotive with the coal tower it is important to send the locomotive to a track in which the chute will face the rear of the locomotive upon loading the coal. This was common practice in real life operations as it helped to prevent excessive amounts of coal dust and small coal particles to enter the cabs of the locomotives while the coal was loading. If you manually drive the locomotive to the tower in the opposite manner, the coal will not load into the coal bin of the tender and the coal will be "dumped" on the back half of the tender. If a locomotive is sent to the Coal Tower via AI control and sent to a track in which the chute is facing the front of the locomotive, the AI driver WILL NOT be able to find the coal tower or stop under it to refuel.

Union Pacific #9000
$6.00
Number 9000 was built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in Schenectady, New York and was the first 4-12-2 locomotive to enter service for the Union Pacific. It was delivered in April 1926. The locomotive remained in service until 1956. It was decided upon retirement of the locomotive to donate it to the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds for display in Pomona California. The locomotive made the trip from Cheyenne to California under its own power. Steam locomotives had not been seen on the rails from Ogden, Utah to California for some time, so special arrangements had to be made for coal and water stops. The model represents the locomotive as it would have looked just prior to departure for California. It had been freshly painted and the drivers were painted with white rims.

| Union Pacific #9014
$6.00
The model of the 9014 represents the locomotive as it would have looked in 1935. In 1934 the locomotive underwent a major overhaul. Due to problems with the Gresley Valve Gear on the front of the locomotive, the Gresely Valve Gear was removed and replaced by a second link and corresponding Walschaerts Valve Gear being added to the right hand side of the locomotive. The cross compound air compressors were also moved from the front of the smoke box to the sides of the locomotive drastically altering the locomotives appearance. The engine was quickly nick-named a "bald faced nine". Later engine numbers 9006-9009 and 9011-9013 were converted to third link locomotives.

| Union Pacific #9021
$6.00
The model of #9021 has a smoke deflector on the smoke stack. Smoke deflectors were installed on a number of engines per request of the crews. In the winter the smoke and steam from the stack tended to melt the ice on the roofs of the tunnels and the dirty water would fall onto and run into the cab. The deflector, when raised forced the smoke and steam towards the rear of the locomotive and helped to alleviate the problem. This model is very dirty and looks like it has been hard worked and due for some maintenance.
|
| Union Pacific #9087
$6.00
Number 9087 was the last 4-12-2 locomotive built for the Union Pacific. It was shipped in September 1930 and was retired in 1954. This model closely resembles the model of the #9000 except for the fact that this locomotive had a front end throttle which is visible on the right hand side of the locomotive and it has the appearance of a somewhat dirty engine..

Locomotive Features
New Features added to the TRS 06 upgrade
The locomotives have been scripted by PhilC to enhance steam locomotive operations.
| When operating in cab mode, the locomotives require attention. If the water level gets too low, the locomotives will "explode" and derail. This feature can be turned off in surveyor mode. | |
| The locomotives will now interact with a new prototypical coal tower and water plug. |
| Each locomotive is highly detailed and accurately represents its road number some of the locomotives have been heavily weather for a very realistic look. | |
| All the locomotives use particle effects made with Twinkles. These are the most realistic smoke and steam effects to date on a steam locomotive. | |
| Locomotives all have lighted headlights, class lights and number boards | |
| Cross compound air pumps are animated | |
| Cold feedwater pump and generator are animated | |
| Cab side and front windows open and close using the pantograph key | |
| Main bogey has the most accurate valve gear animation to date. | |
| Unique to this locomotive is its third cylinder. The Crosshead and main rod of the third cylinder are animated and can be seen in motion between the frame. | |
| The Gresley Valve Gear on the front of the locomotive is accurately model and very accurately animated. | |
| Locomotive #9014 has a very unique valve gear animation. Please read the details on the previous page regarding the "Bald Faced Locomotives". The third link and double Walschaerts Valve Gear on the right hand side of this locomotive are accurately modeled and accurately animated. | |
| Realistic engine physics and pulling capacity |
Cab Features
New Features added to the TRS 06 upgrade
| Roof hatches have been added and can be opened and closed | |
| Outside wing windows that are moveable have been added | |
| The cab valves have all been labeled with accurate name plates |
| Two versions of the cab are used on the locomotives and each cab is accurately modeled for each type of cab | |
| Each cab contains an animated Fireman that works the valves of the stoker | |
| Each cab has six gauges that all accurately show the values as they appear in the HUD display | |
| Each cab has several animated levers some of which are not yet supported (such as the bell lever, the cylinder steam cocks lever, blowdown lever and dual sanding levers) | |
| Side and front windows open and close | |
| Water level in the boiler is visible in the water columns | |
| Firebox door opens and closes |
